Intesa Sanpaolo, Mastercard and Gemalto announces pilot of dual interface Biometric Payment Card in Italy

MILANO, November 8, 2018 – Yesterday, at the opening day of Il Salone dei Pagamenti 2018 – Payvolution, it was unveiled the first Italian pilot for a Biometric Payment Card. The announcement was made jointly by the issuing bank Intesa Sanpaolo, the payment network Mastercard and the technology supplier Gemalto.

The battery-less Biometric Payment Card will be tested at live merchants within 153 selected bank employees in Turin, Milan and Rome starting from November 26, 2018. The pilot is expected to run for about 16 weeks.

The cardholder fingerprints will be registered via customized secure tablets that will be installed in specific bank branches in the target cities.

The customized secure tablet that will be used for user fingerprint enrollment.

The Biometric Payment Card under test is a credit Gold Card operating on Mastercard circuit.

The dual-interface Biometric Payment Card that will be used in Intesa Sanpaolo pilot in Italy.

Giovanni Memoli, Key Account Manager at Gemalto Italy said:

“Gemalto is confirming its leadership in innovation bringing its latest technologies into a Biometric Payment Card developed to ensure convenience for in-store transaction. In fact the contactless card presented today not only allow to remove the cap on tap-and-go transaction is also giving users greatest peace of mind in case of lost or stolen card because only the registered fingerprint enable the card to become operative at POS terminals.”
