Malta – 400,000th biometric passport issued

By | February 22, 2018

Identity Malta has in recent days issued the 400,000th passport to Maltese citizens. It is calculated that by the end of this year each valid passport will be biometric.

As a commemoration on this significant event, Parliamentary Secretary for Citizenship Julia Farrugia presented a memento to Mrs Michelle Guisti who is the 400,000th person who applied to renew or to have a new passport.

Intensive work is also currently underway so that by the end of the year, Maltese passports will all be biometric. It was pointed out in a statement that Maltese citizens, including Mrs Guisti herself, are benefiting from an offer, valid until the end of March, of a €10 reduction on each passport.

The Parliamentary Secretariat for Citizenship statement added that Identity Malta processes some 40,000 passports a year, an average of 3,300 passport montly.

In recent months, Identity Malta made efforts to simplify the process and today an application takes less than 15 minutes to be processed. This is done notwithstanding all the necessary security measures that are taken, including the applicant’s finger prints and other internal controls. Following this delicate process, Identity Malta commits itself that the passport is collected by the client after four days.
