KABUL (Pajhwok): The Youth Jirga from Loya Paktia has thrown its weight behind the issuance of electronic National Identity Cards (e-NICs) and demanded legal action against those trying to sabotage the national process.

Abdul Hakem Safi, head of the Youth Loya Jirga, told reporters in Kabul that if issued e-NICs would help reduce crimes, ensure transparent elections.

He warned powerful individuals against derailing the ID card process for reaching their nefarious designs in Afghanistan.”

Safi called e-NICs distribution a national process and remarked those trying to halt the process was in fact committing treason and should be tried under the law.

“I don’t know why some political figures are against the word ‘Afghan’ to be mentioned in e-NICs at a time when the country’s supreme law has already removed all doubts about it in the article four,” Safi wondered.

Obaidullah Zadran, deputy head of the Jirga, said all legal procedure of the electronic ID cards process had been completed and no issue existed in the distribution of e-NICs.

He asked the government not to allow anyone to disrupt the e-NICs distribution process and said most of the major issues would be resolved if the process launched.

But Chief Executive Officer CEO Abdullah has demanded a halt to the e-NICs issuance saying the process needed more deliberation and discussion before being commenced.
