Tanzanian President John Magufuli at a ceremony held in Dar es salaam on Wednesday launched a new e-passport for the country’s citizens.Speaking at the launch, Magufuli said it was high time the country digitalized its passports to ensure it does not fall in the wrong hands.
Stressing that a lot of immigrants have been taking advantage of the current type of passport to pass of as Tanzanians, he added that the new digital passports will not be issued unless one has the national identification card.
“The new passport for Tanzania is part of the online immigration system that will ensure visa applicants are able to access it even via a digital system far from the office”. The use of technology has increased and Tanzania cannot be left behind, he added.
The launch ceremony was also be attended by the President of Zanzibar and chairman of the revolutionary council, Ali Mohamed Shein.

Tanzania has been in the front line in the East Africa region in providing services to citizens through the internet.
The registration of companies, money transactions and public service provision to be paid by the citizens are among the online services available in Tanzania.
