Last year saw the largest ever number of passports issued at five-point-23 million, up 12 percent from 2016.
The Foreign Ministry released the figures Tuesday, adding that the total number of passports held by Koreans was 29 million.
The ministry added the increase in passport issuance was largely due to the steady rise in the number of annual overseas travelers which stood at 24 million as of the end of November.
Another reason was the re-issuance of the first batch of electronic passports whose ten year expiry date was drawing to a close.
