India – Passport applications touch 1 million a month, says Ministry

Passport Seva Kendras are receiving about a million of applications per month says the Ministry of External Affairs. The number of people applying for passports has been increasing ever since. To meet the demand from the public and also to help those frequent travelers in getting their passport formalities done, now and then passport melas are set up. In those passport melas only fresh applicants are considered, the ones which are not fresh, i.e., the ones who are rejected or withheld are not entertained. The melas are conducted at every city at regular intervals of months.

To felicitate easy process, the Ministry of External Affairs told that the rent agreement slip could also be used as a proof of address. This is a move to be welcomed as there are a lot of people who are still struggling to get their Aadhar approved and the ones who have lost their ration cards or those who do not possess a voter id and those who do not have any documents for verification for the proof of address. The rent agreement slip should be more than a year old.

The infants and disabled people are exempted from the biometric procedures like finger scanning. The details regarding the passport application and renewal can be obtained from WhatsApp using the number provided by the government.

To ease the issue of passport as the Kendras were not able to handle the crowd, post offices were also roped in. There is more than 50 post office passport kendras in the country, and they have generated about 3, 50,000 passports till now.

The project was bagged by the TCS back in 2008, and the entire project services employ over 5700 people apart from the post office staff and the central government staff who are in the law enforcement with TCS employees occupying almost 3000 positions. The TCS group suggested that this kind of kendras can be implemented all throughout the country with TCS providing the required backend software services that are needed. Earlier there were only 37 passport offices in the country and that required people to travel to far off distances to apply for a passport. After the features like Post office passport Seva kendras came in, one was able to apply more easily. The TCS coming into this has proved to be an amazing example of how the details of millions can be managed by an IT firm. After the advent of IT, the use of social media platforms like Twitter is being used by the applicants and holders to convey their grievances.
