The Dutch Payments Association announced that the country has passed 1 billion contactless card payments. The service first started in 2014, meaning contactless payments passed the 1-billion mark much faster than PIN card payments, which took seven years to reach the milestone.

The share of contactless in all card payments has risen to a quarter. Most payments are still under EUR 25, where no PIN is required. Only 10 percent of contactless card poayments are for amounts over EUR 25, up from 5 percent the previous year. The average payment amount rose to EUR 11.20 from EUR 8.90 a year ago.

Around two-thirds of all payment terminals in the Netherlands support contactless.
