Hutchison Drei Austria has become the first provider in the country to launch an eSIM device, that is, with an embedded SIM card, reported Der Standard. The first device using the new technology will be the Watch 2 by Huawei, which the operator will start selling in October.
Although mobile operators have been opposing the introduction of eSIM cards, they can make users’ lives simpler, as no change of physical SIM card will be necessary. Number portability will be faster, too, as instead of a chip card, only a computer signal from the provider will be necessary. In future, the process will run automatically in the background, without the user even spotting it.
