BHOPAL: The Union government has decided to open passport centres at nine new locations in Madhya Pradesh. External affairs minister Sushma Swarajrecently announced the launch of 149 new Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK) across the country, including nine in MP.

“These will be in addition to four POPSKs announced by the ministry of external affairs in the first phase, an initiative undertaken jointly by the MEA and the department of post. After this, we will have altogether 13 passport centres in the state,” said regional passport officer Manoj Kumar Rai.

According to him; the ministry may announce more centres for remaining districts in the third phase, after the completion of mapping and of checking the viability of post offices.

Prior to this scheme, MP had only one passport office, located in Bhopal. In such a situation, people seeking the national document had to travel far in order to get it. However, now that many such offices are to open across the state; Rai says that it may also soon be able to start e-passport services for its citizens.
