As the deadline for sim-card registration draws closer, the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) says those who have registered in the last days will have to wait till the verification is complete.
Florence Nakakawa a resident of Kasokoso in Kireka says she arrived at Nakawa division at 7am in the morning with hope of returning home with her national Identification card. The 60 year old looked weary as she patiently waited in the queue because it looked like she was not going home with her ID.
Florence like many others has tried to get registered but in vain. She says the exercise has cost her time and money and wants government to consider issuing national identification cards at places of registration
However, the spokesperson for NIRA Michael Muganga says they have a challenge of human resource, which cannot match the overwhelming numbers. Muganga also attributes a litany of complaints to wrongful entry of personal data
Over 1.5 million additional national identification numbers have been confirmed by NIRA in the latest round of registration
NIRA will continue with the registration and issuance of national Identification cards even after the deactivation of simcards.
